Floratam St. Augustine Turfgrass – SAD Free

Floratam St. Augustine Turfgrass was developed in 1973 by the combined efforts of Florida A&M and Texas A&M Turfgrass extensions. The primary purpose of Floratam St. Augustine was to propigate a St. Augustine Grass that would be resistant to Chinchbugs and the St. Augustine Decline Virus, SAD. This was accomplished and the turfgrass born out of it was Floratam St. Augustine Turfgrass.

Since that time Floratam has been distributed to all along the Coastal areas South of Interstate 10. Coastal Sod began shipping Floratam St. Augustine Turfgrass into the Corpus Christi area in 1982. Our primary source of Floratam were our farms in Bay City, Texas and in Harlingen, Texas. Both were top quality Floratam St. Augustine Turfgrass farms.

Floratam St. Augustine Turfgrass is Drought Resitant

Floratam St. Augustine is a unique St. Augustine Turfgrass. It is slightly larger than the other variets of St. Augustine but it is also more drought tolerant. The stolon’s of Floratam St. Augustine are about three inches long and are a deep red purplish color.

Floratam grows from roots extending from the nodes on each stolon. These roots grow about six to eight inches into the ground and this feeds and waters the Floratam.

The leaves of Floratam St. Augustine Turfgrass are also slightly larger than other varieties of St. Augustine turfgrasses. They grow rapidly and florish with vigor in the summer heat along the coastal areas of the Gulf of Mexico.

To be sure you are getting a true Floratam St. Augustine Turfgrass you must look for the deep redish purple stolons.

If the grass you receive when ordering does not have this distinctive coloration to the stolons then most likely your supplier did not supply you with Floratam St. Augustine. Unfortunately there are turf vendors out there that will substitute one type of turf for another.

Floratam St. Augustine Turfgrass if a vigouous growing St. Augustine. It can grow up to one to one and a half inches per day. That is thirty to fourty inches per month. But it is a beautiful deep bluish green colored grass and will compliment any tropical landscape in our area.
