Floratam St. Augustine Grass Sod – Disease Resistant
In the early 1970’s the Florida and Texas Agricultural Experiment Stations developed and released Floratam St. Augustine grass. This type of St. Augustine grass sod is resistant to SAD (St. Augustine Decline) Virus. Floratam is also Chinchbug resistant.
Floratam St. Augustine grass is a little coarser than other varieties of St. Augustine grass. It has a deep red purplish color St.olons. The nodes average about 3″ in length. The leaves on Floratam are wider and longer than common St. Augustine grass but overall Floratam St. Augustine turf grass is more drought tolerant than the other varieties of St. Augustine grass.
Floratam St. Augustine Grass Sod and Cold Tolerance
The one drawback to Floratam St. Augustine grass sod is that it is not as cold hardy as some of the other varieties of St. Augustine turf grass. For this reason it is recommended that it not be planted north of IH-10 or Hwy 90, which Corpus Christi is more than one hundred miles south of IH-10. To help prevent cold damage you can use a preconditioning winterizer fertilizer on your Floratam St. Augustine grass. Use a 3-1-2 or 4-1-2 ratio at the beginning of the fall weather around the first part of October.
Floratam St. Augustine grass sod is highly competitive against weeds. The main reason for this is that it grows so thick that it shades the seedlings them so they get no sunlight and can’t grow. Floratam St. Augustine grass is also so thick that it smothers most other weeds that might get past the germination stage.
